The 2016 MTV Movie Awards were like no other from the very beginning—and we mean that in more ways than one.
First, it was the only year in history to take place entirely outside. The event went down on the Warner Brothers backlot (yes, the whole thing) in Burbank, Calif., in honor of the 25th anniversary of the awards show.
And second, hosts Kevin Hart[1] and Dwayne Johnson[2] made their entrance Mad Max-style, clad in leather get-ups and face masks while riding on their very Fury Road desert cars. They soon segued into a more traditional monologue setup, but it was memorable (and, yes, slightly disturbing) nonetheless.
Since this is Kevin Hart and The Rock we're talking about, the hijinks got more over-the-top from there, whether they were throwing barbs at each other—short jokes for Hart, the term "Chocolate Shrek" for Johnson—or busting out old embarrassing photos. And yes, for those wondering, MTV did manage to dig up that classic shot of The Rock in a turtleneck and a fanny pack.
For those thinking that the opening monologue would be the end of the physical comedy gags, well, you were wrong. Enter The Dark Chocolate Knight and the Samoan Superman. And yes, that's exactly what it sounds like. Hart and Johnson donned some very, er, form-fitting costumes to do a riff on the Marvel-versus-DC Comics aspect of the evening.
And then who could forget the most visceral moment of the evening, the sure-to-be-Grammy-winning song "When Leo Got F--ked by a Bear." It featured Kevin and The Rock rapping about, well, when Leo got f--ked by a bear. We assume you can all use your imagination with that one.
The twosome closed the show out in a way that only Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson can: By setting off a giant fireworks display. After Alexander Skarsgård[4] presented the final award without any pants at all, it was the least they could do to one-up that moment.
But pyrotechnics aside, we still that turtleneck-fanny-pack throwback pic is still going to go down as the most memorable.
