Movie Talk: Tom Hiddleston in Talks for James Bond; The Rock Confirmed for ‘Doc Savage’

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (May 31st, 2016) Mark Ellis, Kristian Harloff, Jon Schnepp, Clarke Wolfe, Ashley Mova discuss the following:

  • Box Office Report (Brought to you by AMC Theatres)
  • Tom Hiddleston in talks to play James Bond in Bond 25[1]
  • First image of The Rock's Hobb's character from Fast 8[2] released
  • Opening this week (Brought to you by AMC Theatres)

x-men-apocalypse-final-posterAfter the long holiday weekend, it's time for the weekend box office[3] report brought to you by our friends at AMC theatres. Fox's X-Men: Apocalypse and Disney's Alice Through the Looking Glass squared off over Memorial Day weekend with a clear winner being crowned in X-Men: Apocalypse. The latest mutant adventure topped the weekend earning $65.3 million dollars over three days and $80 million over four days for an easy No. 1 spot. The other wide release, Alice Through the Looking Glass, took in $26.9 million over the three-day weekend, with a total of $34.1 over the four-day weekend for the No. 2 spot; a not so favorable start for a film with an $170 million production budget. Sony's The Angry Birds Movie took in $18.7 million for the three day and $24.6 million in four days for the No 3 spot, bringing its domestic total to $66.3 million. Captain America: Civil War took the No 4 spot with $15.1 million in three-days and $19.4 million for the four-day weekend. Universal's Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising rounded out the No. 5 spot, dropping a steep 58% for $9.2 million in three-day sales and an $11.4 million total for the four-day weekend.

Some major shake-ups happening in the world of James Bond[4]. According to a report from Birth Movies Death, Tom Hiddleston is in talks for the 25th James Bond film. At the same time, Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes, ruled out a return to the director chair, telling reporters at the Hay Festival of Literature in Wales that he thinks its time for somebody else to take over directing. Current Bond actor Daniel Craig has yet to confirm his departure from the iconic role, with previous reports claiming the actor turned down a $68 million dollar offer to stay on – after he previou sly said he would rather "slash my wrists" than reprise the role. BMD also states that Hiddleston is in 'advanced talks' to take over from Craig. Elsewhere, however, Deadline reports that Fantastic Four actor Jamie Bell is being considered as a "a back-up" to current Bond actor Daniel Craig. No official word has been given from either actor or from the producers of the James Bond franchise.

doc-savage-bookDwayne Johnson recently finished his R-rated version of Baywatch, and is currently filming Fast 8 (with producer rumblings that his Hobbs character will get his own solo spinoff film soon). He is also attached to a Jumanji reboot and a San Andreas sequel. Now, thanks to his own Facebook page, add one more title to the list. Over the Memorial Day weekend, The Rock confirmed he is set to star in Shane Black's Doc Savage. Johnson relayed the information in a Facebook photo post that featured Shane Black and his co-writing team of Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry along with producer Hiram Garcia. In confirming the part, Johnson wrote that he's excited for the part, and that Doc Savage is "A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO!" [5][6]

BUY OR SELL

More news from the Rock, production on Fast 8 is well underway and now The Rock's government bounty hunter Luke Hobbs has reported to the set[7]. Johnson took to his social media, as he always does, to unveil the first look at the character; teasing a very different version of Hobbs than we've seen before. The new movie is directed by Straight Outta Compton's F Gary Gray and stars Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gisbon, and Kurt Russell. The movie opens in theaters on April 14, 2017.

kingsman-the-golden-circle-jeff-bridges-posterMatthew Vaughn's sequel to Kingsman continues to add impressive talent to its roster, with Jeff Bridges the latest actor announced to be joining the cast. Bridges let the world know he was coming on board, sharing a poster from the movie on his official Twitter account. Kingsman: The Golden Circle will see Taron Egerton r eprising his role as the now-Kingsman Eggsy along with Mark Strong as his trusted tech support Merlin. Vaughn also added newcomers Julianne Moore as the film's villain, along with Halle Berry and Channing Tatum as the American versions of Kingsman, The Statesman. The Golden Circle is slated for release on June 16, 2017. [8]

While the DC Extended Universe goes through a bit of a shake-up behind the scenes, filming on the Batman v Superman follow-up Justice League continues. Production on the Zack Snyder-directed team-up got underway in London two weeks after Batman v Superman hit theaters, with most of the main cast, naturally, confirming a return – with one part in particular not being announced, that of Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor. But now, we have an official confirmation from Eisenberg himself[9]. Speaking at MCM London Comic-Con over the weekend, Eisenberg revealed that he indeed has a role in Justice League, tell ing fans he's waiting for his crack at it now that it's begun filming.

OPENING THIS WEEK

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows – Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael return in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows to battle bigger, badder villains, alongside April O'Neil (Megan Fox), Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett), and a newcomer: the hockey-masked vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell).

Roberto Vazquez writes:

Hello Collider! Greetings from Monterrey Nuevo León Mexico! My question is about the new MCU Spiderman standalone movie. Do you guys think that we could see Spidey break the fourth wall like Deadpool did? In the comics he is always making jokes and talking to himself. Thank you for taking my question… You are doing an excellent job!

Garry Richardson writes

Hi Collider crew,

And greetings from the UK,

With Paramount dropping the lawsuit against the Star Trek: Axanar fan film I was wondering why they would have even brought one in the first place? Surely they want people interested in Star Trek and isn't it the same argument we use when discussing the DC/Marvel fan war, that both companies want the other to succeed? Are they simply concerned a fan funded movie could be better than their own perhaps?  I have seen the trailer for Axanar and it looks amazing and to be honest I am more pumped about watching that than I am about seeing Star Trek Beyond right now as I feel the new rebooted universe has lost the essence of what made Star Trek great. Could studios lose money if fan films begin to get better and better?  With film making technology becoming more available and cheaper for anyone to buy could we see in the future a war for audience numbers between major studios and fans?

Keep up the great work and live long and prosper

Snag Tickets for Sony's E3 Movie Theater Broadcast Today

Coming soon to a theater near you: the PlayStation E3 Experience 2016.

For the third consecutive year, Sony will broadcast its E3 press conference live in movie theaters across North and South America.

Snag a free ticket[1] today (starting at 1 p.m. ET) to view an HD simulcast at one of 85 select movie theaters across the US, Canada, and Latin America. But be quick: Once tickets run out at each location, hopeful attendees are put on a waitlist and seated on a first-come, first-served basis.

"There's just something special about watching the news and excitement of E3 together with fellow PlayStation fans that makes this an event I look forward to every year," Michael Steranka, PlayStation brand activities manager, wrote in a blog post[2].

"Between the loud cheers that, honestly, probably ruin movies for people in adjacent theaters (sorry not sorry), and the camaraderie felt in the air from being surrounded by the PlayStation Nation, there's no better way to experience E3," he said.

But you can expect more than a sense of fellowship: Participants will go home with special PlayStation goodies, including a commemorative Coca-Cola E3 Experience Cup and number 37 from the PlayStation Collectible Card series, introduced last year.

There is also a digital gift basket, the contents of which will remain secret "for now," Steranka said.

At last year's[3] event, Sony opened the conference with a gameplay demo of The Last Guardian, and revealed plans for a Final Fantasy 7 remake and controversial Shenmue 3 Kickstarter[4].

Check the PlayStation blog for a list of participating theaters across the continent. Folks in Latin America can keep an eye on Sony's regional blog[5] for more details.

A reporter who went hunting for Veerappan watches 'Veerappan' the movie

Having spent a good part of my career visiting the jungle which Veerappan ruled, and writing about him in the newspapers where I worked, I watched Ram Gopal Varma's movie with some expectations. I must confess that it left me frustrated and disappointed.

At best, the film offers glimpses into Veerappan's character. A glimpse is what a short story is made of. A novel or a film needs to tell as complete a story as possible. A series of glimpses spliced together do not make a film. They only produce an episodic hotchpotch that raises more questions than answers.

One of the many reasons why the movie looks patchy is that Varma presents Veerappan as a flat, one-dimensional, pure-evil character with an almost permanent scowl on his face, ready to kill any moment. The film tells viewers 'what' the bandit did and 'how' he did it, but leaves them scratching their heads and wondering 'why' he did what he did.

The film is long on Veerappan's killings but short on his motive. Good fiction-writers and film-makers know that a strong motive makes a strong villain. For instance, the bad guys in James Bond movies, based on both Fleming's original books and the franchised works that came later, have quirky and outlandish motives.

Sandeep Bharadwaj as Veerappan in Ram Gopal Varma's film on the smuggler

Sandeep Bharadwaj as Veerappan in Ram Gopal Varma's film. Youtube screen grab.

The Veerappan movie is not based on fiction, and Varma didn't need to invent a motive. It was all there in his real life and all you needed was a little digging. The bandit was not driven just by money. And it wasn't political power—though he did have a political ambition for a while. And it wasn't some sort of hero-worship for LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran either. What kept him going was a barbaric, animal-like instinct for survival.

Veerappan began by killing elephants and selling their tusks, before he branched off into sandalwood smuggling. There was nothing else he was capable of doing to make a living in the jungle. But when poaching and smuggling became less profitable he took to kidnappings and extortions to survive. He killed people including forest and police department officials, even when he had the slightest suspicion that they threatened his survival. Or, in some cases, he killed for revenge—and he killed brutally.

He craved for money for his continued survival, but didn't seem obsessed with it. I found that he sold the elephant tusks and sandalwood cheap. From poaching, smuggling, kidnappings and extortions he did make a lot of money—estimates range between Rs 20 crore and Rs 50 crore—during the nearly three decades of his career. But he gave a good part of it to villagers and local officials who helped him as well as other friends and relatives.

He kept the rest of the money in plastic covers and buried them in different parts of the jungle—nobody knows where.

And Veerappan didn't go after LTTE for friendship. It was a small Tamil nationalist group supporting LTTE, and another Naxalite group that befriended him. They promised him weapons in return for the security of forest cover. They needed Veerappan more than he did. It was they who made him talk of Tamil issues. Veerappan couldn't care less about the Tamil cause. All he wanted was to survive—to stay alive.

Veerappan was evil, yes. But he was also something else. He was, at times, timid to the point of being cowardly. He was scared of death. He was terrified that either the police or his own men would decimate him.

And he was also helpful to villagers.

This is not to suggest that Varma should have glorified the criminal by turning him into a Robin Hood. This is to suggest that most real-life people are not one-dimensional and flat, and Veerappan too wasn't. That's the very reason why fiction writers create three-dimensional characters to make them seem like real people and to make them believabe. Varma has missed a chance.

I remember finding poverty-ridden villagers in the deepest parts of the jungle in sudden possession of new, mint-fresh Rs 500 notes. They wouldn't admit to getting the money from Veerappan. But they had several stories to tell. Their common theme was that Veerappan was a good man and the police were the bad guys. Grateful to their mentor, they would feign complete ignorance to the police about his movements.

And many others didn't talk to the police for fear that Veerappan would kill them if they did. They feared the police because of the beatings the villagers got, but they feared the outlaw more. This carrot-and-stick strategy of Veerappan's led to an information famine for the police, it was one of the chief reasons why he held out so long in the forest. If Varma was trying to tell viewers "why Veerappan was allowed to happen"—in media interviews, he said that's what his intention was—he should have had more of this.

Among the other reasons why Veerappan survived for so long were:

--He knew the forest so well that he could, when needed, escape from one place to another in a matter of hours, while the police would take a day or more.

--He picked vantage points from where he could watch the movements of his enemies, and ambush them when he chose to.

--The police were never really serious in wanting to catch him. Top echelons of the police had sidestepped the forest department officers who knew the terrain better. Most of the lower police echelons posted in the area were physically unfit and mortally afraid of Veerappan.

Varma's masterstroke was his choice of Sandeep Bharadwaj for Veerappan's role. The right makeup transformed Bharadwaj into a near-lookalike of the brigand, but this advantage was more than overshadowed by the uni-dimensional nature of the role. Bharadwaj worked hard, a bit too hard, to look murderous but occasionally ended up looking ridiculous.

Two women take too much time in the middle part of the movie. Shreya (the wife of a police officer killed by Veerappan, played by Lisa Ray) tries to use the bandit's wife Muthulakshmi (Usha Jadhav) to trap him. It served as a necessary subplot but could have been shorter. One gets the impression that Varma had this part only to add the feminine presence. And it's also marred by the fact that Muthulakshmi, who had once said she married Veerappan because of his moustache and notoriety, is more mellowed in the film than she really is.

The police operation to trick Veerappan into coming out of his den and then kill him ended the film reasonably well. But at one point what was meant to be a profound scene turned out to be ludicrous. The officer who leads the operations climbs up an elevated place and rotates his head apparently to look for the brigand. A policeman in real-life Veerappan's jungle would stand on open ground in that fashion only if he wanted a bullet in his head. The killer could be perched on a tree nearby.

Justice League Movie To Have A Linear Script Compared To Batman vs Superman

Jeremy-Irons-Alfred- justice league movie

Many people that have seen Batman vs Superman will know that the movie was trying to set up too many things all at once. Jeremy Irons (Alfred) has now admitted that the Justice League script won't be so complicated.

Irons mentioned this during a new interview with The Daily Mail. He said[1]: "It was very muddled. I think the next one will be simpler. The script is certainly a lot smaller, it's more linear"

Earlier in the interview, Irons was not shy on his opinion on Batman vs Superman. He is pretty much the only cast member to admit that the movie did have its flaws.

He mentioned the movie deserved its negative reviews: "Deservedly so. I mean it took £800 million, so the kicking didn't matter but it was sort of overstuffed…"

Irons even laughed when the Daily Mail mentioned one quote from a critic that called it "the most incoherent blockbuster in years". It's safe to say Irons is an old-school actor that doesn't mind speaking his mind.

His comments about the Justice League movie script hints that Warner Bros. is playing it safe and keeping it simple. As aforementioned, Batman vs Superman tried to cram in too many storylines into one movie.

Movie Review – ‘The Do-Over’

Movie Review – 'The Do-Over'

Buy movies on this topic at iTunes | Amazon[2][3]

There are a few people in the movie industry that people love to hate. While Michael Bay is probably at the top, Adam Sandler cannot be far behind. But unlike Bay, whose popularity we can understand, Sandler has grown increasingly perplexing. Definitely one of the most well-known cinematic comedic voices of the past 20 years (and one of the few who has worked consistently on his own projects throughout this time), his latest efforts have become downright bizarre. Once you get strip away the "Adam goes on vacation" trappings, the films are lazy, depressing, and soulless in an uncommon way. The Do-Over is no different. (NOTE: SPOILERS – but it's an Adam Sandler movie, so who cares.)

The Do-Over, Sandler's second movie made under a lucrative Netflix deal, is technically an action-comedy that stars him and usual cohort David Spade as Max and Charlie, two miserable men who fake their own deaths to escape their miserable lives – or rather Max kidnaps Charlie and forces him to do it. After engaging in rampant hedonism for well over a week (and an unnecessarily high percentage of the movie's running time), they find themselves the target of assassins looking to kill the dead people whose identities they stole.

Sandler, aided by officially credited writers Kevin Barnett (The Heartbreak Kid, Hall Pass) and Chris Pappas (Unhitched), throws in a token amount of unmemorable shoot outs and a surprisingly high number of uninspired gay jokes that never seem mean enough to be offensive, but barely a scene goes by without at least one happening. Director Seven Brill, who previously directed Sandler in Little Nicky and Mr. Deeds, might be fair enough at action sequences, but beyond those, the movie has a disconcerting flatness and lack of energy, as though we're watching a rough cut, before the addition of a score, ADR, or foley.

DoOver2

As an actor, as usual, Sandler is one of the film's biggest problems. The rest of the cast is actually fine. High ranking Happy Madison troupe member Spade gives a surprisingly solid performance who does the best he can with the role and probably better than it deserves. Paula Patton has the third most important role as Heather, the wife of the guy whose identity Charlie stole (and who has a secret of her own!). Small roles are populated by underused, better-than-this actors such as Michael Chiklis, Kathryn Hahn, Matt Walsh, Catherine Bell and Natasha Leggero.

Predictably, Sandler is where the movie falls apart. For a movie like this to work (see Midnight Run, The In-Laws), the dynamic of the two main characters is well established: you have the straight man (Charles Grodin, Alan Arkin) and the crazy one (Robert De Niro, Peter Falk). The crazy one needs to have a good mix of scary and charisma, where you don't exactly trust him, but you also want to follow him as both an audience member and as a character. Max never hits the manic heights of the crazy one, instead playing his character with his recent penchant for a stoicism belying a depression. (That he pretty much always wears jean shorts and a t-shirt isn't a stylistic choice, it's a cry for help.) For whatever reason, Sandler seems to be actively avoiding fun.

However, the issue with Sandler's character is symptomatic of the biggest issue with The Do-Over – it is completely tone deaf. At first glance, the plot could be played for comedy – two guys fake their own death, but it turns out the assassins are after the people they stole their new identities from. Solid enough premise. As the movie progresses, it turns out the assassins want these two people dead because they discovered the cure for (a certain type of) cancer, which would cost Big Chemo trillions of dollars in profit. Yes, the chemotherapy industry is the villain in this. We're entering strange, turbulent waters here, but nothing that cannot be navigated. The Crazy Conspiracy that goes Straight To The Big Wigs At The Top is fair comedic fodder. Shows like Mr. Show with Bob and David, Children's Hospital[4], and South Park[5] have all made great use parodying conspiracy theories; the more outlandish the better.

Except The Do-Over actually plays it straight, with characters expressing a genuine moral disgust towards the actions of the bad guys. Moreover, the two people whose bodies/identities Max stole weren't random, and they weren't just involved in finding the cure to cancer, they were involved in finding the cure to a terminal form of cancer that Max actually has. A cancer so bad that he abandoned his wife Becca (Kathryn Hahn) and child so that they didn't have to deal with his eventual death. A cancer so bad that Charlie even "cries" upon reading about the diagnosis. And all the while more innocent people die on behalf of Big Pharma. Could this have been done darkly comedic? Definitely, and The Nice Guys (my review[6]) pulled off something in a similar vein with gusto. Did The Do-Over? Not in the slightest. (And none of this even touches on how Sandler seemed content to relax and party for a fair amount of time before putting his cancer-curing scheme into action.)

The film becomes burdened with an unnecessary seriousness from which it cannot recover. Becca who first comes across (and is purposely written) as a crazy ex-girlfriend evolves into a genuinely tragic figure dealing with loss. Sandler's character of a self-destructive lunatic who shoots firsts and asks questions later becomes a man on a legitimate suicide mission who brings his friend on his death wish for no good reason. When we have all this information, Max seems to have had a nervous breakdown closer in spirit to Sandler's character in Reign Over Me[7] than in any of his Happy Madison productions. So at the end when we get a token joke about the effect gravity has on an older lady's bosom, it rings false and con fusing.

But this unnecessary seriousness that has emerged as a strange motif within the Happy Madison oeuvre. Click ended up being about Sandler's character's inability to face the death of his own father and willfully dying himself when he realizes how crappy a father and husband he was. The Ridiculous Six was about Sandler coming to terms with witnessing the brutal murder of his own mother when he was a child and the subsequent abandonment by his father …who ends up betraying his kids for personal greed, much like Heather does to Charlie and Max in this movie. Even in Pixels, the implication is that his character is a deadbeat dad who harasses women and insults people because he is so angry and miserable towards his own life. We're pretty far from "The Puppy Who Lost Its Way[8]."

We can accept our comic heroes having horrible traits, as long as they are funny, outlandish, charismatic or simply likeable – see Deadpool for example. But Sandler has grown more dour and depressive as time has gone on, edging closer to being a genuine bully than simply a fool. He has mostly abandoned the man-child persona in favor of some bastardization of the straight man, but he keeps embodying these anti-social traits. Shooting a flare gun at someone during a montage should be played for laughs, not attempted murder. Without the goofiness to cushion his more violent/angry moments, he's just a dangerous ass. He could make a great villain.

Verdict: 1 out of 5

It seems unfair to judge Happy Madison movies on any conventional scale. Pixels, The Ridiculous Six, and The Do-Over are all 1 out of 5 movies for entirely different reasons. The Do-Over is easily the least impressive of the three, offering not much in the way of action or comedy or anything else. It's hard to imagine how Sandler will bring us emotionally lower than basing an entire movie around a legitimate cancer subplot, but if anyone can find a way, it's the man who made fighting Pac-Man feel completely heartless.

Finding Dory Might Be the First Pixar Movie to Feature a Lesbian Couple

© Pixar Finding Dory hits theaters June 17 — and might be making some progress along the way. The newest trailer features a shot that shows what looks like two moms doting over a baby in a stroller.

Fans have been asking for a queer princess Elsa[1], but it looks like Pixar might have beat already been ahead of the game. And sure, this couple doesn't appear to be main characters; we seem to only catch a glimpse.

But, regardless, look at Pixar, sneaking in progress where it can. Maybe Elsa and her mystery gal[2] will have a precedent.

Hollywood films are beating Bollywood biggies at the domestic box office…

On Friday early box office trends indicated that The Angry Birds Movie would beat Ram Gopal Varma's Veerappan[1] and Kalki Koechlin's Waiting and it has actually happened! This year we have seen the likes of Shah Rukh Khan's Fan losing the BO war to Neel Sethi's The Jungle Book and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's Sarbjit lost to the X-Men: Apocalypse. So this isn't surprising.

The Angry Birds Movie[2] dominated the theatres and that reflected in the box office figures. The occupancy was very good and the film collected Rs 9.04 crore in just 3 days. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, "#TheAngryBirdsMovie dominated the marketplace, surpassing Hindi films… Fri 2.20 cr, Sat 3.22 cr, Sun 3.62 cr. Total: Rs 9.04 cr nett."

Ram Gopal Varma's Veerappan[3] was touted as his big comeback project and while the movie got a good response and the audience increased over the weekend, the film failed to come anywhere close to the Hollywood film that released alongside and collected Rs 5.95 crore over the weekend. Occupancies were average for this film. Trade expert, Taran Adarsh confirmed this on Twitter, "#Veerappan Fri 1.79 cr, Sat 1.96 cr, Sun 2.20 cr. Total: Rs 5.95 cr nett. India biz."

Kalki Koechlin's Waiting[4] got great reviews, but theatres saw low occupancy and the movie did not make any impact. It had a bare minimum collection and according to Taran Adarsh Waiting's total collection over the weekend was Rs 1.30 cr.

We hear that Radhika Apte's Phobia[5] like Kalki's movie got great reviews, but failed to make an impact in terms of box office collection. With Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's Sarbjit failing to perform, The Angry Birds Movie will do well throughout this week with no competition from Bollywood movies. But when Akshay Kumar and Jacqueline Fernandez's Housefull 3[6] releases next week, we will have to wait and see if the collections will dip.

Johnny Depp's latest movie flops

Johnny Depp's 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' tanks

Johnny Depp's latest movie, "Alice Through the Looking Glass," got off to a bad start.

The film opened to $28 million domestically over the weekend, despite a cast that includes Depp, Anne Hathaway and Mia Wasikowska.

But the film, which has a $170 million budget, failed to impress critics or moviegoers. It has a 30% score on the review site Rotten Tomatoes[1].

The box office disappointment comes at a tumultuous time for Depp. On Friday, A Los Angeles judge ordered the actor to stay away[2] from his estranged wife, Amber Heard, who claimed he has been abusive toward her.

The couple married in February 2015. Heard filed for divorce last week.

The box office totals of Depp's new movie are a far cry from the success of Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland," the film's 2010 prequel. That movie shattered several box office records, capitalizing on the growing popularity of 3-D films at the time. It opened to $116 million in the U.S., topping "Avatar" and setting a record for the debut of a 3-D feature.

Burton, who directed the 2010 film, was only involved as a producer this time around, with James Bobin taking over as the director.

Several of Depp's recent movies flopped during the opening weekends. Crime thriller Black Mass made $22.6 million, while Transcendence, in which Depp plays a controversial scientist, opened to $10.8 million.

The 2015 action comedy Mortdecai was a real box office bomb, opening to just $4.2 million.
