Nintendo going into the movie business: Here are 8 games that should get a film adaptation

You'd think Nintendo would never get into the film industry again after its terrible '90s adaptation of "Super Mario Bros[1]." However, the company is looking for a do-over and plans to release movies based on its game collection within the next five years.

CEO and President Tatsumi Kimishima told the Japanese publication Asahi Shimbun[2] that Nintendo is currently in talks with various partners about developing movies and other video cont ent.

"We'd like to use IP that is popular with everyone," Kimishima said. "I can't say it'll be Mario — just that we'll do things that people will be familiar with."

It was unclear which titles would be adapted into films, but the Daily News has a pretty good idea of which fan favorites we'd like to see in theatres. Here are our top eight:

"The Legend of Zelda"

"The Legend of Zelda" is probably the best video game suited for a movie adaptation. It has the right elements of fantasy to be turned into a movie with similar CGI and costumes as the "Lord of the Rings."

There are probably a dozen actors that can play Link and Zelda, but Elle Fanning would be perfect as princess Zelda (since we already saw her as the lovely Aurora in "Maleficent"), and Thomas Brodie-Sangster (who played Jojen Reed in "Game of Thrones") would be an ideal Link. As for the big bad guy Ganon, maybe get someone like Joe Manganiello or Hugh Jackman to play him.

It was reported last year that Netflix was working on a live-action series based on "Zelda," but Nintendo did not confirm that rumor to be true — who knows when we'll hear about this again.

"Contra"

"Contra's" casting would be a no-brainer; we'd have Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger play the two commandos.

People love war movies, so why not make one based on "Contra?" The casting would be a no-brainer; we'd have Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger play the two commandos Bill Rizer and Lance Bean, respectively. And if they're too old to play action roles, then we can just cast Idris Elba and Daniel Craig.

The plot of the game would also lend itself to a great movie adaptation. Yes, "Contra" does have a plot. The two commanders are trying to take down the evil Red Falcon Organization, which wants to take over the world — you know, your cliché evil mastermind plot line.

"Metroid"

"Metroid" can be the next "Alien" in the science fiction genre. This game needs to be turned into a movie and Emily VanCamp should play the famous bounty hunter Samus Aran — it just makes sense. Just imagine VanCamp protecting the galaxy while fighting alien space pirates.

VanCamp already has a few action roles in her resume[3] including Emily Thorne in "Revenge" and most recently, agent Sharon Carter in "Captain America." If VanCamp is not available for the role, then Ronda Rousey should definitely play the part.

Castlevania

The vampire fad might've died with the "Twilight" movies, but "Castlevania" still stands a chance in the box office. This videogame franchise can easily be turned into a saga that its creators can milk for years — just like "Underworld."

"Castlevania" would focus on the conflict between Dracula's vampires and a Transylvania knight who is trying to seek refuge for his men. The movie would be action-packed and involve a lot of blood and death. It'd also be great if it receives the "300" treatment and it's directed by Zack Snyder.

"Megaman"

If "Tron" was adapted twice, then "Megaman" definitely has a shot. However, it would have to be animated for it to do well in the box office. The franchise would revitalize the games and appeal to new generations of children. Eventually, a new toy line and cartoon series would get developed.

"Megaman" would have to be produced the same way "Astro Boy" was in 2009. Otherwise, if it's live-action it'll just resemble "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over" or "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D."

"Paper Boy"

The classic "Paper Boy" could be turned into a family comedy.

The classic "Paper Boy" could be turned into a family comedy.

(Nintendo)

"Paper Boy" is another video game with potential. Imagine it as a comedy with a pre-teen who perpetually gets in trouble for breaking windows and hitting people with rolled up newspapers. Occasionally, he would get chased by the neighbor's rabid dog, only to become best friends with it in the end.

The movie would have to be set in the '80s or '90s, though — I don't think paper boys are a thing anymore. The youngster with the titular role would probably be a newcomer to Hollywood, who would eventually become an award-winning star or end up with several mugshots — much like other child actors.

"Donkey Kong"

Not Released (NR)

"Donkey Kong" could either be turned into a live-action or an animated film.

Disney's live-action version of "The Jungle Book" did very well in the box office, so a live action version of "Donkey Kong" is not a farfetched idea, right? Imagine a massive CGI gorilla version of Kong hurling barrels at its enemies as he jumps from vine to vine in the Jungle. Along his side would be Diddy Kong, a small monkey wearing a red cap and shirt, who throws bananas hoping his enemies will slip on them. The enemy would of course have to be a crocodile on steroids named Kritter, just like in "Donkey Kong: Country."

On second thought, "Donkey Kong" would work better as a cartoon movie.

"Tetris"

A two hour-long movie featuring colorful moving blocks would either be boring, or the most intense experience ever! Just imagine the anxiety you'd get by watching a block slowly move down the screen and having no control over it. You'll constantly be frustrated not knowing if it'll land on the right spot, and when it does, the whole theater will clap and cheer.

Just kidding. A "Tetris" movie would be the worst thing ever and it'd be a bigger flop than Disney's "John Carter."
