As gamers, we expect video games to come with a number of pre-order bonuses. It's pretty much an industry standard now and has been for many years, but the same can't be said about movies. Typically, you buy your ticket when you arrive at the theater and that's the end of it, but now the world of video game marketing is bleeding over into films. The upcoming Assassin's Creed movie will have a number of pre-order bonuses.
The pre-order packages are available to purchase from the Kernel website[1]. Notice how I said "packages." Yes, there are various pre-order tiers, ranging from $15 all the way up to a whopping $1,200. Each package contains something unique, including t-shirts, watches, action figures, toy hidden blades, and statuettes. The $1,200 package comes with a 1:1 scale replica of a Spanish crossbow from the movie. All tiers come with a digital copy of the film's script, behind-the-scenes extras, and of course, a movie ticket.
Movies with pre-order bonuses. A well-tread joke used by cynical gamers has now come true. If people are actually willing to spend more money to get all of these extras, then good on them, but there's just something gross about it. I hope this doesn't become a trend. We've seen how crazy things have gotten with video game pre-orders over the years, so it would be sad if movies start down that same road — even though they're most likely completely optional. But: Just imagine having to pre-order a ticket to a Marvel movie just to unlock the after-credits stinger!
Assassin's Creed will be released in movie theaters on December 21.
