Nostalgia trip for ‘Hum Tum’ director as movie turns 12

Director Kunal Kohli reminisced about the movie, giving us some well-cherished anecdotes.

Twelve-years-ago today, 'Hum Tum' released. Be it the cartoons, the peppy single by Rishi Rich and Veronica or the rich love story between Saif Ali Khan's and Rani Mukherjee's characters - the film had many firsts.

Director Kunal Kohli shared some of these firsts on Twitter, while remniscing about the time spent on set.

Here are some things about the rom-com that Kohli shared.

1. The film was considered India's 1st rom-com.

2. Hum Tum got actor Saif Ali Khan his first national award.

3. Rishi Kapoor made his entry in the movie in a very meta moment. He was singing 'Main Shayar Toh Nahin' - a song from his own film Bobby. According to Kohli, the theatre exploded with claps and whistles.

3. Budget problems led them to shoot portions intended for Paris and America in Amsterdam.

4. Prasoon Joshi was initially approached to write the dialogues.

5. Hum Tum cartoon strips actually went on to be printed in a newspaper, prior to the movie's release.

6. Rishi Rich and Veronica's single, Hum Tum, went viral - well, as viral as viral in 2004 can get.

7. Not many believed the animation narrative would work. But thankfully, Kohli says him and Aditya Chopra stuck with it.

8. Kirron Kher, who plays Rani's mother in the film, loved the script from the get-go!

9. Yash Chopra wasn't in support of the film initially, but was convinced after he saw it.
