What's it about
In the land of birds, Red (Jason Sudeikis[1]) is a recluse who has intermittent anger issues. After a scuffle with a family, he is assigned to undergo anger management therapy where he meets Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb (Danny McBride). At the same time, a strange ship arrives with pigs, the leader of whose is Leonard (Bill Harder). Having never seen any other species before, the birds welcome them with open arms, and the pigs also gels with the inhabitants and throw parties to win their trust. A suspicious Red, however, doubts their intentions, but no one bothers to listen to him. One night, the pigs throw a huge bash for the birds and steal their eggs under the cover. After finding all the eggs are lost, the birds realise that Red was right all along, and asks him to lead an attack at the pigs' kingdom.
What's hot
The Angry Birds movie stays very true to its core, the game. Several elements of the famous game have been adapted here. If you have been a sucker for this game like millions of others, you will love the final attack sequence when the birds storm the pig's castle. You can see the various bird attacks so familiar with the game like the exploding bird, the boomerang bird, the blowup bird and others. Apart from these, the film shines best when it pays homage to other movies, like the creepy twins scene from The Shining or Chuck's Quicksilver[2] moment. If the film has more of these, it would have been one of the best in the genre. The voice cast is competent, the best of the lot being an always excellent Bill Hader. Josh Gad, however, looks to repeat his Frozen act. The animation is also very good to look at, especially in the final sequences.
What's not
While the runtime of the film is quite short, several scenes are stretched so much that they teeter on boredom. Except for the crystal lake part, the entire Mighty Eagle sequence lacks impact and fails to provide good laughs. The dialogues too are nothing to write about. Sure there are a few specks of witticisms (Haven't you heard of bird control?), but most of the times the jokes fall flat! Even though the film is a comedy, it would have appealed a lot if there was some tension built in the climax. However, the predictability of the scenes make the final fight end on an average note. Some of the jokes are too mature for the kids to understand.
What to do
The Angry Birds[3] movie has nothing extraordinary to offer, but it is still an enjoyable one time watch thanks to a few funny scenes and great animation. Go for it if you are a fan of the game, or rather if your kids are pestering you to take them.
