As the thermometer mercury rises, so will the amount of CGI explosions at the multiplex. The forecast calls for a deluge of action sequels and just a drizzle of potential Oscar contenders.

Welcome to summer movie season — the time of year when popcorn flicks, not awards fare is on the menu, the skies are filled with super heroes and the seas teem with animated fish.

Here are some of the Daily News' picks on the best reasons to sit in a dark air-conditioned while others are catching rays on the beach:

"X-Men Apocalypse" (20th Century Fox) Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique leads a young band of super heroes into battle against a nearly invincible mutant out to destroy the human race. The big bad is played by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" veteran Oscar Isaac, barely recognizable under a mountain of prosthetics and makeup.

"Alice Through the Looking Glass" (Disney) It's another over-the-top trip down the rabbit-hole with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

June 3

"Me Before You" (Warner Bros.) Bust out the hankies for this adaptation of the best-selling romantic novel.

"Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping" (Universal) "SNL" alum Andy Samberg plays a boy band singer with a penchant for offensive lyrics and alienating his former friends in this mockumentary.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" (Paramount) The title pretty much says it all.

June 10

"Warcraft" (Universal) Is it fantasy to hope this will be the first really good adaptation of a video game for the big screen?

"Now You See Me 2" (Lionsgate) Another sequel materializes faster than you can say, "Abracadabra!"

"Finding Dory" (Disney) Pixar will reel in the kids and their parents with this follow-up to the 2003 computer-animated fish tale, "Finding Nemo."

"Central Intelligence" (Warner Bros.) Kevin Hart and the slightly bigger Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson star in this buddy action comedy about a accountant drawn into a CIA agent's case. Guess which one plays which.

"Independence Day Resurgence" (20th Century Fox) It took the aliens 20 years to return to Earth, by which time original star Will Smith grew too big for the franchise.

"The BFG" Director Steven Spielberg reunites with Oscar-winning "Bridge of Spies" star Mark Rylance, for this big-hearted adaptation of a Roald Dahl novel about a girl who befriends a giant.

"The Secret Life of Pets" (Universal) An animated family comedy that goes to the dogs.

"Captain Fantastic" (Bleecker Street) A father (Viggo Mortenson) prepares his six kids to leave the nest…which happens to be in the forest of the Pacific Northwest.

"The Infiltrator" (Broad Green Pictures) "Breaking Bad's" Bryan Cranston goes back to the drug trade … sort of … in this true story about a U.S. customs agent who uncovers Pablo Escobar's money-laundering scheme.

"Star Trek Beyond" (Paramount) Captain Kirk and co. boldly go forth to face off against Idris Elba's villainous Krall just in time for the 50th anniversary of the "Star Trek" franchise.

"Jason Bourne" With Matt Damon back as the formerly amnesiac secret agent and Paul Greengrass returning behind the camera, the film is bound to be more memorable than "The Bourne Legacy."

"Bad Moms" (STX) Mila Kunis leads a group of under-appreciated moms to have their own playdate to remember.

"Suicide Squad" (Warner Bros.) This looks like a job for ... Superman's enemies? Will Smith leads a band of supervillains conscripted into secret missions for the government in the latest adventure in Warner Bros' shared cinematic universe of DC Comics superheroes. Jared Leto took his job seriously taking over as the Joker from the late Heather Ledger.

"The Founder" Someone snuck in some intellectually nutritious content in with all the popcorn! Michael Keaton is getting some early award buzz in this biopic about McDonald's founder Ray Croc.

"Sausage Party" (Sony) A potty-mouthed comedy voiced by Seth Rogen that's definitely not for the kids.

"Florence Foster Jenkins" (Paramount) Meryl Streep hits a high note in this true story about a New York City heiress who won't let a horrible voice keep her from opera stardom.

"Ben Hur" (Paramount) How do you fight an idea? If we knew, we would've stepped in and suggested not remaking the 1959 classic.
