Supervillains come together to save the world in 'Suicide Squad.' Warner Bros. Pictures
A band of supervillains is kicking up some serious buzz on Twitter.
According to the social-media company, Suicide Squad is the most tweeted upcoming summer movie coming out in the next three months. The film, out Aug. 5 and starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie, garnered 1 million tweets between March 1 and May 26. Online conversation was boosted around the movie thanks to a Joker Twitter emoji with the hashtag #JokerWasHere — shared by the new Joker, Jared Leto, to his 2.27 million followers — and an April trailer that had more than 130,000 retweets and 170,000-plus likes.
Following behind in the same time frame were: the upcoming Pixar sequel Finding Dory (June 17) with 869,000 tweets; Paul Feig's all-female Ghostbusters (July 22) with 565,000 tweets; the romance Me Before You with 329,000 tweets; the sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (June 3) with 251,000 tweets; and the fantasy video-game adaptation Warcraft (June 10) with 244,000 tweets.
Two high-profile movies out right now have also proven very popular on Twitter. Captain America: Civil War, which featured several character emojis and fans pledging allegiance to #TeamCap or TeamIronMan in various ways, generated 10.4 million tweets in the time period, while X-Men: Apocalypse rang up 1.8 million.
