Despite the mixed, internet-searing reception for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, one thing was made abundantly clear: Wonder Woman was impressive during her restricted screen time. Now, after making a solid debut and more than holding her own alongside Batman and Superman, the Amazonian warrior will star in her own solo, live-action film in 2017 — three weeks ahead of schedule.
Whether the impressive appearance in Batman v Superman was responsible for seeing Wonder Woman moved up the calendar by three weeks, as revealed by Comic Book[1], will probably remain unanswered, but the move clearly indicates one thing: Warner Bros. is confident in her abilities. In light of this, actress Gal Gadot spoke about her role in the upcoming movie and revealed that, where Wonder Woman will be more of a coming-of-age story, it will definitely be "humorous, but dark."

Be warned, if you haven't seen Batman v Superman, there are minor spoilers ahead."In Batman v Superman, you get a glimpse of who she is but not where she comes from. In Wonder Woman, this would be the first time we ever tell the coming-of-age story of how Diana becomes Wonder Woman. It's very interesting. It has moments of humour, but it's pretty dark. We all saw before the beautiful coming of age of Batman, Spider-Man, Superman. We don't know anything about Wonder Woman. We go back 100 years to when she's more naïve. She's this young idealist. She's pure. Very different to the experienced, super-confident, grown-up woman you've seen."
Batman v Superman touched on Diana Prince's origin story in an attempt to establish the Justice League, but much like Batman/Bruce Wayne alongside her, Wonder Woman was a veteran during the movie, an experienced superhero with a grasp on her legacy, her responsibility, and her powers. Where this was a tantalizing taste for DC fans, it seems the spin-off movie will have a lot more to explore. As mentioned by Gadot herself, the movie will show how Diana Prince becomes Wonder Woman – from humble beginnings to unstoppable heroine. Fans of the character will know her story begins during World War I, and not much else has been revealed for the movie just yet, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out on the big screen.
As mentioned above, Warner Bros. have moved Wonder Woman up from June 23, 2017 to June 2, 2017. When the date change was announced, fans were worried the film had been pushed back, which usually indicates a problem with the movie. This isn't the case, and the fans will be relieved they can see Wonder Woman in all her solo glory three weeks earlier than scheduled. Summer schedules are usually unmovable when set, so this can be seen as an excellent sign in regard to the film.
As for the "dark, but humorous" comment, it seems Wonder Woman will be in keeping with Zack Snyder's current vision of the DC Extended Universe. It began with Man of Steel, and continued through Batman v Superman, but the film-makers should be wary; much of the critical feedback for these two films was aimed at the depressing, darker tone, and it was even rumoured that the recent re-shoots on Suicide Squad, another DC property released in 2016, were damage control for this. This has since been debunked, as revealed by Total Film[3].
In the first set image from Wonder Woman, it was clear the movie would be an origin story for Diana Prince. This has since been confirmed by Gal Gadot, and events in Batman v Superman. Nothing major has been revealed about Wonder Woman's plot yet, but if the hints from Batman v Superman are anything to go by, Diana Prince's journey from girl to woman was anything but easy. Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent should know a thing or two about that, shouldn't they?Directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Lucy Davis, Connie Nielsen, and Robin Wright, Wonder Woman will open in cinemas on June 2, 2017.
