Tim Burton movie trailer boosts 'Miss Peregrine' book sales

Here's a look at what's new on USA TODAY's Best-Selling Books list…

Movie magic: Ransom Riggs' quirky young-adult book Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Quirk Books) is the latest title to benefit from a buzzy movie trailer.

The new visually arresting snippet from director Tim Burton has propelled Miss Peregrine to No. 4, up from No. 95 last week. (The full list will publish on Thursday.) That's the highest spot ever for the 2011 novel; its previous peak was No. 30, on Feb. 20, 2014.

The movie adaptation of the fantasy about a 16-year-old boy who discovers the crumbling ruins of an old home inhabited by children with "magical abilities" is due on Sept. 30. The cast includes Asa Butterfield as Jacob and Eva Green as Miss Peregrine.

"We've seen a big pop in sales after Fox debuted the trailer on March 15 on Good Morning America," says Quirk Books' Nicole De Jackmo.

Riggs' two Peregrine sequels are also back in the top 150 this week: Hollow City is No. 64 (it previously reached as high as No. 6, on Jan. 23, 2014), while Library of Souls is No. 98 (its previous peak was No. 4 on Oct. 1, 2015).

The trilogy is illustrated with eerie vintage photographs that Riggs has collected, and it's not hard to see why Burton wanted to bring his vision to the movie.

Quirk Books is planning to release two new books in September timed to the movie's release: The Art of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children — a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film — and Miss Peregrine's Journal for Peculiar Children, featuring vintage black-and-white photos and quotes from all three books.

Last month, the release of the movie trailer for Me Before You saw Jojo Moyes' weepy romance shoot to No. 3 (up from No. 141 the previous week). This week, Me Before You is No. 8.
