Today's question:
In the old days one would go to a movie or watch a TV show and there would be one producer and one director for that movie or show. Now it is not unusual to see 13 or more producers for a single TV show. What do all of these folks do?
Do you know what a tent pole movie is? Neither did I until I came across the word while trying to find an answer to this matter.
A tent pole movie is considered to be a sure fire hit that promises a big return on its cost. A blockbuster is a really high budget production that could bring huge profits but also might be a big flop.
The thing of it is that big movies can take several years to develop, film, edit and put in distribution.
All along this process producers might come and go or various people might lead the effort in one or two stages but not the whole shebang.
At the top of the heap is the executive producer. That person has raised at least 25 percent if not more of the funding of the production.
And the executive producer also played a major role in securing the rights to whatever material the movie is based on and developing that material for the movie.
A co-producer reports to the producer and is in charge of all the logistics of the production all along the way. And then it goes on down the line with some degree of producer credits going to people who led or made significant contributions various stages of putting out the movie.
