MTV Movie Awards nominees prove more diverse than Oscars with ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Creed’ and ‘Straight Outta Compton’ honors

'Straight Outta Compton,' and one of the N.W.A.' biopic's stars, O'Shea Jackson Jr., were nominated.

It's the one movie awards show of the season in which "The Revenant's" Leonardo DiCaprio has a chance at losing out on a best actor prize ... to Ryan Reynolds for "Deadpool."

And Mark Ruffalo won't be invited onto the Warner Bros. lot where the telecast is held for Oscar-winner "Spotlight" — but for "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

Academy Awards voters can't turn their noses up too high at the list of MTV Movie Awards nominees released Monday, because the music network's ceremony won't be marred by the same lack of diversity that plagued its more distinguished counterpart.

Whereas last month's Academy Awards produced a field of nominees that had just one person of color up for a major award and inspired the hashtag, "#OscarsSoWhite," the MTV nominees included the actors and filmmakers behind "Straight Outta Compton," "Concussion" and "Creed."

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens," snubbed even for technical honors at the Academy Awards, leads the pack with 11 nominations.

The biggest box office hit in North American history will vie against "Avengers: Age of Ultron," "Creed," "Deadpool," "Straight Outta Compton" and "Jurassic World."

Hosted by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Kevin Hart, the MTV Movie Awards air on the music network on April 10 at 8 p.m.

Besides Reynolds, DiCaprio will face off against fellow Oscar nominee Matt Damon ("The Martian") and Will Smith ("Concussion"), Michael B. Jordan ("Creed") and Chris Pratt ("Jurassic World") for Best Male Performance of the Year.

In the female category, Oscar winner Alicia Vikander is a nominee — though for the sci-fi flick "Ex Machina" instead of "The Danish Girl." She'll be up against Anna Kendrick ("Pitch Perfect 2"), Charlize Theron, ("Mad Max: Fury Road"), Daisy Ridley ("Star Wars: The Force Awakens"), Jennifer Lawrence ("Joy") and Morena Baccarin ("Deadpool").

The Breakthrough Performance category is jam-packed with Amy Schumer ("Trainwreck"), Brie Larson ("Room"), Daisy Ridley ("Star Wars: The Force Awakens"), Dakota Johnson ("Fifty Shades of Grey"), John Boyega ("Star Wars: The Force Awakens") and O'Shea Jackson Jr. ("Straight Outta Compton").

There's a brand new True Story category for this year's awards pitting "Straight Outta Compton" against "Concussion," "Joy," "Steve Jobs," "The Big Short" and "The Revenant."

But the MTV Movie Awards, now in its 25th year, has always had more of a popcorn flavor then the champagne tastes of the Oscars. Viewers can vote through March 20 at mtv.com/ontv/movieawards/vote-nominees[1].

There are also still categories like Best Kiss — in which "Fifty Shades of Grey" actually has a shot at something other than a "Razzie" and Best Fight Scene.

"Star Wars" Sith-head Adam Driver, aka that jerk Kylo Ren, is the heavy favorite for the Best Villain award after having broken generations of hearts by killing off one of the most iconic heroes in cinema history.
