Top 6 things to do around Indy this weekend: State fair, MotoGP & more - WRTV Indianapolis

Check out my pick of the top six things to do around Indy this weekend:

Indiana State Fair

Elephant ears, sweet corn, lemonade shake-ups and more -- there may be more than food at the Indiana State Fair, but it sure is my favorite, and I have a feeling I'm not alone.

The fun kicks off Friday and lasts through Aug. 23. And as a bonus, opening day just so happens to be RTV6 Day at the Fair -- so make sure to stop by our booth and say hello.

Don't miss the concerts at the Free Stage all weekend: Indigo Girls on Friday at 7:30 p.m., Morris Day & The Time on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and the Hispanic/Latino Music Festival on Sunday. I repeat, they are all free shows.

Admission into the fair is $12, but I would suggest buying your tickets ahead of time for only $8. That's an extra $4 you can spend on delicious food or midway rides!

Also not to be missed: The animals -- llamas, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits & more will all be on display.

Moto GP

Ready to head back to the track? MotoGP returns to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend.

The 2015 Red Bull Indianapolis GP showcases the world's greatest motorcycle riders on the 16-turn, 2.621-mile road course at the IMS.

There is a full day of events Saturday, including practice, qualifications, autograph sessions and stunt shows.

Sunday is the big day -- gates open at 7 a.m. but the race doesn't start until 2 p.m. If you head out early, there are plenty of activities to stay busy and enjoy the day ahead of the big race.

Tickets for race day are $20 and up.

Farmers Market

Take advantage of summer and all the delicious food that local farmers, shops and restaurants have to offer.

There's nothing like hitting up the farmers market to stock up on delicious eats for the week. Whether you sample crepes in Carmel or find just the right ingredients to take home in Broad Ripple, you won't regret checking out your local farmers market.

Symphony on the Prairie

We have a serious question: John, Paul, George or Ringo? Who's coming out to #SOTP15 this weekend? http://bit.ly/1MysgCK

Posted by Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra on Tuesday, August 4, 2015

So this isn't my first time recommending that you head to Fishers for Symphony on the Prairie, but it never disappoints.

Beautiful weather, friends, family, a picnic of your favorite food and the music of The Beatles. It just doesn't get much better than that.

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will not actually be playing at this performance, but The Classical Mystery Tour will play their tribute to the Fab Four. Definitely plan on hearing all your favorite songs.

So just Let It Be, pack your favorite food and drinks and head to the show. The performance starts at 8 p.m., but feel free to get there early to get a good spot and enjoy the people-watching.

Colts Training Camp

In case you missed opening weekend of Colts training camp (or maybe you just love it -- that's OK too), make your way to Anderson to watch Indy's best prepare for the season.

Practice runs from 1:55 p.m. until 4:40 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday is Armed Forces Day. The day is dedicated to the men and women who have served or are currently serving our country. Members of the armed forces who present a military ID will receive discounted parking and concessions.

Sunday is Community Take Back Day. Fans who bring unused or expired prescriptions will receive a free copy of the 2014 Colts highlight DVD called "Knocking on the Door." Sounds like a win-win to me.

American Idol Live

Get ready to sing along to your favorite songs because the top five contestants from Season 14 of "American Idol" are coming to town.

The American Idol Live! Tour is making a stop in Indy on Sunday. Newly crowned winner Nick Fradiani will perform for fans along with Jax, Tyanna Jones, Rayvon Owen and Clark Beckham.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at Old National Centre.

Have a great weekend, Indy!
