Police believe the shooting was an accident, according to a police statement.
Police in Renton, Washington, said in the statement[2] that "an intoxicated suspect entered one of the theaters and was fumbling with a handgun he had in his possession when it went off, striking another patron seated in front of him."
The woman, 40, was shot in the upper torso and transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition, reports KOMO-TV. Her condition was later upgraded to stable, according to the Seattle Times.[3][4]
The incident occurred at Regal Cinemas The Landing in Renton shortly after 8 p.m. during a showing of Michael Bay's 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.
The shooter left the theater immediately after the incident, according to the Renton Reporter,[5] but his father called 911 at 9:41 p.m. saying his son was distraught and had told him he had dropped his gun at the theater and it had discharged.
The shooter, 29, has not yet been identified. He was arrested without incident. He could face a number of criminal charges, KOMO said.
