Manhattan's last large, single-screen movie theater will close in weeks, according to reports.
The legendary Ziegfeld movie theater — made famous nationwide for hosting numerous movie premieres over the years — will be replaced by a high-end event space called the Ziegfeld Ballroom.
The movie theater's leaseholder, Cablevision, was notified Wednesday that landlord Fisher Brothers real estate had found a new tenant, according to[1] the New York Post.
Along with a 10,000-square-foot ballroom, the new space will feature mezzanine meeting rooms and advanced electronic facilities for galas and corporate events.
The decades-old Ziegfeld, a mecca for movie buffs, has been losing more than $1 million annually in recent years, the Post reported.
The current Ziegfeld opened in 1969 on 54th Street in the heart of midtown. It replaced an adjacent theater of the same name that was razed in 1966.
The Ziegfeld Ballroom is expected to open in the autumn of 2017.
New Yorkers looking to get a moviegoing experience from the silver screen's Golden era aren't completely out of luck, however. The Paris Theatre, on West 58th Street, is still in operation.
