Here's a guide to what's on the big screen in the Milwaukee area. It doesn't include listings for movies opening next Friday but holding Thursday night screenings, including "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," "The Choice" and "Hail, Caesar!"

After Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait strands tens of thousands of Indian nationals in the country without cash or passports, a longtime Indian ex-pat and businessman leads an effort to get his countrymen to safety. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip

In the fourth live-action/computer-animated movie inspired by the characters, Alvin, Simon and Theodore, convinced that Dave (Jason Lee) is going off to get married and dump them, hit the road to block the wedding.

Anomalisa

Feeling thwarted by the mundane nature of his life, an author meets and falls in love with an unassuming woman whose forthrightness gives him hope. Charlie Kaufman — he of "Being John Malkovich," among other mind-bending gems — sets out to tell an extraordinarily ordinary human tale using stop-motion animation. With voices by Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Noonan, David Thewlis. Oscar nominee for best animated feature.

The Big Short

An eccentric money manager, a young Wall Street banker, an activist-minded hedge fund operator and a former banker bet against the 2000s housing boom — and the global economy. Michael Lewis' bestselling book about the economic collapse and the handful of money men who spotted the trouble before anyone else is the basis for this comedy directed by Adam McKay, with Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell and Brad Pitt. Five Oscar nominations, including best picture, director, supporting actor (Bale).

The Boy

A young American woman takes a job as a nanny in an English village and finds out her charge is actually a life-size doll that's the spitting image the 8-year-old son thought lost in a fire 20 years earlier. Thriller with Lauren Cohan ("The Walking Dead").

Bridge of Spies

PG-13 (some violence, brief language). 141 minutes. Playing: Oak Creek Budget.

An insurance lawyer who defended a Soviet spy is called on to negotiate a swap of said spy for a U.S. pilot of a spy plane shot down over Russia. Tom Hanks plays the lawyer enlisted to help thwart World War III in Steven Spielberg's thriller. With Mark Rylance, who went to the University School of Milwaukee, as Soviet spy Rudolf Abel. Six Oscar nominations, including best picture, supporting actor (Rylance).

Brooklyn

Saoirse Ronan as a young Irish woman in the 1950s who comes to America and falls in love, only to be called back to Ireland and question where her true home lies. Three Oscar nominations, including best picture, actress (Ronan).

Burnt

Bradley Cooper as a burned-out rock-star chef trying to get his act together.

Creed

The son of Rocky's rival-turned-pal Apollo Creed seeks out the ex-fighter to help him train for the ring. With Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed and Oscar nominee Sylvester Stallone as the aging, ailing Italian Stallion.

Daddy's Home

Stepdad Will Ferrell and birth dad Mark Wahlberg try to outdo each other in winning their kids' affection in this slapsticky comedy.

The Danish Girl

Eddie Redmayne plays an artist in 1920s Denmark who becomes a transgender pioneer, with help from a loving wife (Alicia Vikander). Four Oscar nominations, including best actor (Redmayne), supporting actress (Vikander).

Dirty Grandpa

A lewd, crude oldster tricks his straight-laced grandson into taking a raunchy road trip to Daytona in the hopes of liberating them both. Crude comedy with Zac Efron, Robert De Niro.

Everything About Her

After being diagnosed with cancer, a businesswoman tries to make amends with her caregiver and her estranged son. Filipino drama in Tagalog and English.

The 5th Wave

When aliens — some of them in human form — begin a plan to take over Earth, a high schooler out to rescue her brother becomes part of an armed force training to take them on. Based on a bestselling young-adult novel, with Chloë Grace Moretz.

Fifty Shades of Black

The "Fifty Shades of Grey" phenomenon gets the spoof treatment by Marlon Wayans, with Wayans playing Christian Black, a businessman with particular tastes who takes a seemingly mousy girl on a journey of, um, discovery. With Kali Hawk, Mike Epps, Fred Willard, Andrew Bachelor, Jane Seymour and, yes, Florence Henderson.

The Finest Hours

An oil tanker bound for Boston is ripped in half during a killer storm, and a small Coast Guard boat sets out to rescue the survivors. Based-on-a-true-story heroic drama, with Chris Pine as a young Coast Guard captain leading the rescue, and Casey Affleck as the engineer on the tanker trying to keep his co-workers alive. The Forest

After her twin sister disappears in Aokigahara — the forest at the foot of Japan's Mount Fuji, known as the Suicide Forest because it's reportedly the most popular place in the country to commit suicide — an American woman (Natalie Dormer) goes looking for her.

45 Years

R (language, brief sexuality). 93 minutes. Playing: Downer.

Best actress Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay play a couple about to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary, but when the body of his former lover is found 50 years after she fell off a mountain, his wife begins to question everything from her husband's past to their future.

Goosebumps

PG (scary creature images, some rude humor). 103 minutes. Playing: Oak Creek Budget.

A teenager's family moves to a small town and finds out the beautiful girl next door is the daughter of "Goosebumps" author R.L. Stine, who's keeping the monsters he's created locked up in his books. With Jack Black as Stine.

Groundhog Day

PG (comic violence). 103 minutes. Playing: Avalon (Mon.-Tue. only).

Cynical weather forecaster Bill Murray heads to that small Pennsylvania town to do the obligatory story and winds up reliving the day over and over until he gets it right. Beloved 1993 Harold Ramis comedy, with Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott. Showing at 9:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday; tickets are $5.

The Hateful Eight

R (violence, language, a scene of violent sexual content, some nudity). 168 minutes. Playing: Mayfair Mall.

In Quentin Tarantino's latest revenge-ish Western, a bounty hunter (Kurt Russell) is ferrying a prisoner (Jennifer Jason Leigh) when the pair find themselves holed up in a mountain shack with six other unsavory types, played by Samuel L. Jackson, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth, Demián Bichir, Michael Madsen and Bruce Dern. Three Oscar nominations, including best supporting actress (Leigh).

Hotel Transylvania 2

PG (some scary images, rude humor). 89 minutes. Playing: Oak Creek Budget.

Sequel to the 2012 animated hit, with Drac a proud but confused grandfather of a half-human baby whose hoping his young grandson will be able to follow in his wing-steps. With voices by Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, many others.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2

PG-13 (violence, some thematic material). 136 minutes. Playing: Ridge.

Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and friends take the rebellion to the Capitol in the final chapter in the blockbuster action series, based on the second half of the third book in Suzanne Collins' trilogy.

In the Heart of the Sea

PG-13 (brief violence, thematic material). 122 minutes. Playing: Oak Creek Budget.

In 1820, the whaling ship Essex battles a mammoth whale with what seems to be a desire for revenge, forcing the crew to battle the elements, their inner demons and each other to survive. Based on the true-life tale of the whaling ship whose experience inspired Herman Melville's "Moby-Dick." Directed by Ron Howard, with Chris Hemsworth.

Ip Man 3

PG-13 (martial arts violence, brief language). 105 minutes. Playing: Ridge, Southgate.

The martial arts master who trained Bruce Lee returns to do battle with, among others, an American developer with quick fists played by Mike Tyson. Third movie in the popular action series, with Donnie Yen as the title character, Danny Chan as Bruce Lee. In Cantonese and English, with English subtitles.

Jane Got a Gun

R (violence, some language). 98 minutes. Playing: Majestic, Mayfair Mall, Ridge.

Western starring Natalie Portman as a woman defending her homestead against some outlaws with the reluctant assistance of a former beau (Joel Edgerton). Long-delayed production — first by cast and director changes, then by studio bankruptcy filing. With Ewan McGregor.

Josh Groban: Stages Live

Joy

Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence plays a woman whose life has been thwarted by others again and again sets out to do something for herself and her family — and, despite them, pulls it off. Directed by David O. Russell, with Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramirez, Bradley Cooper.

Kung Fu Panda 3

The Martian

A crew is forced to abort its mission to Mars, leaving behind an astronaut believed dead in a massive storm. Only, the astronaut (Matt Damon) isn't dead, and as he fights for survival — and to let the world know he's alive — his crewmates and NASA have to grapple with the realities of rescue. Space drama directed by Ridley Scott. Seven Oscar nominations, including best picture, actor (Damon).

The Metropolitan Opera: Turandot

Moulin Rouge

La Belle Epoque Paris mind-melds with pop music and giddy visual effects in Baz Luhrmann's ambitious, engaging musical. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman play the star-crossed lovers in this dizzying 2001 display.

Norm of the North

The Oscar Nominated Short Films 2016: Animated

Program includes the Russian tale "We Can't Live Without Cosmos"; "Bear Story," from Chile; "Prologue," a tale of two ancient warriors made in Britain; "World of Tomorrow," an American sci-fi tale in which a girl sees the future, darkly; and "Sanjay's Super Team," a Pixar short about a first-generation Indian American blending his family's spiritual roots with his superhero obsessions.

The Oscar Nominated Short Films 2016: Live Action

Live-action short film nominees in this program include "Ave Maria," in which nuns at a convent on the West Bank try to help a family of Israeli settlers, even though the nuns have taken a vow of silence and the Israelis can't use the phone on the Sabbath; "Day One," in which an Afghan-American woman joins the U.S. military and, sent to Afghanistan, must bridge several cultural gaps; "Shok," in which two young boys in Kosovo in 1998 must make some life-or-death decisions; "Stutterer," about a man in an online relationship who's worried about how his speech impediment will change things once he meets his connection in person; and "Everything Will Be Okay (Alles Wird Gut)," a German drama about a father and daughter taking a fateful journey.

The Peanuts Movie

Charlie Brown, Snoopy and friends are back, fighting familiar fights, including Charlie's sports-related futilities and Snoopy's duel with the Red Baron. Computer-animated family movie from a script co-written by the son and grandson of creator Charles Schulz.

Point Break

Remake of the 1991 Keanu Reeves-Patrick Swayze action movie, with Luke Bracey as an undercover cop who infiltrates a crew of calculating extreme-sports bank robbers.

The Revenant

An explorer and hunter in the American wilderness of the 19th century, left for dead by his companions after being attacked by a bear, sets out for revenge. Atmosphere-rich historical drama — based on a novel inspired by a real-life story — by Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu ("Birdman"), with Leonardo DiCaprio as the vengeance-fueled woodsman and Tom Hardy as his former pal turned target. Twelve Oscar nominations, including best picture, director, actor (DiCaprio), supporting actor (Hardy).

Ride Along 2

A woman and her young son make a universe for themselves in a tiny space, but liberation offers challenges of its own. Secret in Their Eyes

Thirteen years after a police investigator's daughter is murdered, the cop's partner finds a lead that could lead them to the killer — if the still-grieving mother doesn't take the law into her own hands. Thriller with Julia Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Nicole Kidman.

Sisters

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler play a pair of fortysomething sisters who find out their parents are selling their childhood home and decide to give their past a send-off with one last, wild house party.

Spectre

After receiving a blast from his past, James Bond sets off on his own to break a mysterious crime organization that could be the source of all of his troubles. No. 4 in the franchise with Daniel Craig as 007, with Christoph Waltz as his nemesis. Oscar nominee for best original song ("Writing's on the Wall").

Spotlight

Investigative journalists at The Boston Globe dig into a story of a priest facing multiple accusations of sexual abuse and discover a much bigger conspiracy within the Catholic Church and Boston's power elite. Drama based on the true story, co-written and directed by Tom McCarthy. With Michael Keaton, Kenosha native Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, John Slattery, Liev Schreiber. Six Oscar nominations, including best picture, director, supporting actor (Ruffalo), supporting actress (McAdams).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi
