Guardians of the Galaxy 2’: New Marvel Movie Characters Great And Small Revealed [Spoilers]

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 rumors are buzzing around[1] the internet and the next one comes to the Marvel web-o-sphere via Geek. Keep in mind, take them with a grain of salt as even director James Gunn himself said last year he'll take no part in following up on these rumors as he cited that "eventually, someone is going to come up with a spoiler that has some truth to it< small>[2]", according to his Facebook page. Keep in mind, there may be movie spoilers here.

Now its been rumored that Ego the Living Planet will be in the movie and if this is true, this could be quite an interesting character adaptation from the comic books. For those unfamiliar with this character, Ego was once a regular planet until he was imbued with sentience by a character called The Stranger[7] according to Slash Film. There was a pivotal moment in the Marvel comics where he teamed up with the Asgrardian, Thor, against Galactus.

So it sounded like he was one of the good guys…at first. Then somewhere down the line, a being called Tana Nile attempted to utilize a portion of Ego for terraforming purposes. The experiment went awry, causing Ego to go insane.

But Guardians of the Galaxy comic book lore indicates no mention of their encounter with Ego, but in the animated series he was slated to be in episode of "Bad Moon Rising", however, this did not turn out to be the case, but according to an episode recap[8] via Nerdist, they instead encountered a "living moon" by the name of Mandala. Whis is not even a planet.

For clarification, don't be confused by Planet Knowhere which is a floating head of a dead Celestial. Though it looks planet-like in nature, it's a severed dead head and not a living planet, but it is highly resourceful and made useful by its residents in the movie.

Also, yet another Guardians 2 movie character has been revealed as Mantis, the green alien with the funny antenna. The character is rumored be portrayed by Pom Klementieff[9] and according IGN and at IMDB she's there in black-and-white[10]. She also starred in Old Boy. Also, Geek reported that Yondu and Nebula will be returning to the Gunn dire cted movie as well.

Now in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie Yondu was last seen leaving Xandar and made colorful metaphor about Star-Lord's father and Nebula jumped ship during a battle where she sided with Ronan the Accuser against the Guardians and the soldiers on Xandar. Now, she's said to be coming back in the second movie.

Director James Gunn was pretty adamant about rumors involving his film and Star-Lord's parents. In the movie, it was his mother that was dying in the hospital bed and then there was a mention of his dad from the mouth of Yondu. The director made a declaration that the rumors involving the parents about Peter Quill were untrue[15], according to a report at Entertainment Weekly back in November.

"The rumors surrounding Quill's parentage at the present moment are completely false, and aren't even close to the truth."

Now, it was also reported via Entertainment Weekly via Heroic Hollywood that Star-Lord's father is Captain Mar-Vell[16], not to be confused by any kind of Kryptonian nomenclature. This was information coming from four different sources that do not know each other according to Umberto Gonzalez[17], editor of Heroic Hollywood. This chara cter is not to be confused by Captain Marvel, but is actually said to be the Silver Age comics character, Mar-Vell[18].

That all said, could the aforementioned Ego the Planet and Mantis rumors be true? Find out in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 come May 5, 2017.
