Fame in Hollywood can come and go. But for some actors such as Robert De Niro[1], hard work and unforgettable performances can result in a career for the ages. All of them!
Before knowing that he would be entertaining entirely new generations of moviegoers in films such as Meet the Parents and Silver Linings Playbook, the two-time Oscar winner was simply relying on his trusty gut when it came to taking on roles.
"I'm just doing what I feel is right. It's not that it's good. I'm just following my instincts and working on what I think I should work on and that's all," he told E! News back in 1990. "I'm not saying what's good or this or that. Sometimes you can get a glimmer and feel that it's right, but you're never really sure if it's working or not or how people are going to react to it."
He continued, "If I look at the movie 10 years from now and I had a real distance from it, then I could look at it and say 'yah, I wasn't bad in that' or something, that's possible."
In our retro interview in celebration of Throwback Thursday, De Niro was promoting his film Awakenings, a role that ultimately earned him his fifth Oscar nomination. (He has seven now overall.)
At the time, the actor expressed his hopes for a long healthy career, so long as he was enjoying himself.
"I'm at that age where I want to work a lot and I have the strength and the will and as long as it's something I want to do, I might as well," he explained.
Whether it's the upcoming comedy Dirty Grandpa or his latest critically acclaimed film, Joy, it's safe to say Hollywood is still loving Robert De Niro on the big screen.
