Deadwood’ Movie Rumors: A Return Is Happening And It’s Coming Soon

Fans have been wanting it to happen for just about 10 years now, and that is exactly when Deadwood officially went off the air. Everyone has been hoping that HBO would bring the show back since it was extremely popular and it lasted a mere three seasons. Rumors of a return and a movie have been around for years, but now it's finally going to be happening as Deadwood is confirmed to be coming back.

Prison Break[1], The X-Files, and a number of other cult classic shows are getting their chance to return and make a comeback. It seems only right that yet another does the same.

TV Line exclusively reported on Thursday night that HBO[2] programming president Michael Lombardo has confirmed the return of the hit Western series. The thing is, it won't be coming back as a TV show and there won't be continuing seasons.

Lombardo has said that he has given series creator David Mitch his personal approval to bring the Western back to life.

"David has our commitment that we are going to do it. He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be — and knowing David, that could change. But it's going to happen."

Now, the exact form that Deadwood will come back in is currently looking to be that of a movie, but that could change as well. Having it return as a TV series isn't out of the question, but one way or the other, the short-lived hit series is coming back to HBO.

Milch has said that he "has something left unsaid" about the series. Lombardo said that he has known Milch for quite a long time and Deadwood is "something he's not done talking about." Fans will be happy to hear that too because now they can stop the petitions and movements to get it back on the air.

Now, the next big question on everyone's mind is, when is it going to happen?

Apparently, Milch currently has a project that he's working on right now, but Lombardo says that after that's over, it's time to head back to the Old West.

"But the understanding is that when he is done with that he will turn his attention to [writing the] script for the Deadwood film."

It's not just the fans who have wanted Deadwood to return. The huge cast that worked on the show has been hoping as well that it would come back. It was only on the air from 2004 until 2006, and Garrett Dillahunt (Francis Wolcott on the show) started buying into the rumors.

Speaking of the cast, the task of getting a Deadwood movie filmed could be difficult. The cast was big enough at the time and the stars are surely all going to be busy when it comes time to try and film again.

This is what makes it seem as if a Deadwood movie could be more feasible. It would consume less time than a TV series brought back to life, but they would still have to find the time.

Deadwood lead Ian McShane[6] would have to be back, and he's prepping to be back for season 6 of Game of Thrones on HBO in a mysterious role of some sort. Entertainment Weekly also casually dropped[7] the bombshell that Game of Thrones was in talks for a seventh and eighth season.

The cast of Deadwood was absolutely huge. Some of the names that appeared on the show are McShane, Timothy Olyphant, Molly Parker, Brad Dourif, Robin Weigert, Jeffrey Jones, John Hawkes, and many others.

A Deadwood reunion is something that fans have wanted HBO to do for a very long time, and now their wishes will be granted. It could be a TV series or more likely a movie, but the short-lived Western with a lot of violence is on the way back, and it won't be too long until it happens.
