On February 13, Box Office Mojo[1] reports what is currently top at the box office. Unfortunately, the R-rated "Deadpool"[2] is number one as of today. Movieguide® states, "...DEADPOOL is a comical action adventure set in the X-MEN franchise universe about Wade Wilson, a foul mouthed, murderous, ex-special forces soldier with super abilities who kills bad guys , but refuses to be labeled a superhero. Foul mouthed, sexually perverse, gratuitously violent and immoral by its own admission, DEADPOOL earns its R-rating. Thanks to some creative marketing, Marvel Entertainment and its distributor 20th Century Fox found a way to draw audiences en masse, however, in the process, they've lost something even more important than financial success: integrity...Throughout the movie, DEADPOOL vehemently attacks, both in word and deed, the values of sacrifice, selflessness, and honor....For years, we've been celebrating the patriotic and compassionate ideals of Captain America, the selflessness of Tony Stark/Iron Man, and the many other heroic characters that make us want to be better, more heroic people ourselves." Fortunately, there are many better choices for movies[3] in theaters this week than "Deadpool." Movieguide.org recommends "Risen" in theaters February 19.
On February 13, Box Office Mojo lists the following movies still in theaters at the top of the box office that may be more suitable for some families, although careful study of good reviews[4] is important before viewing. These PG movies with viewer discretion warnings include the following : "Kung Fu Panda 3" (PG- older children through adults), "Hail Caesar" (PG 13- teens through adults), "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (PG-13, teens and adults), "The Finest Hours" (PG-13- teens and adults), "13 Hours: The Secret Soldi ers of Benghazi" (R, adults), "Brooklyn" (PG-13, teens and adults), "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 2" (PG-13, teens and adults), "Creed"(PG-13, teens and adults), "Joy" (PG-13, teens and adults), and "Norm of the North" (PG, all ages),"
There are some new better choice movies and events coming out in theaters this week. Feb. 15, Fathom events features a live broadcast in theaters of the opening night of the TED 2016 Conference featuring the world's brightest thinkers and idea-generators. Feb. 18 and 20, Fathom Events presents Women of Faith. Viewers will see the untold story behind Women of Faith through the years, on stage and off, on their travels with World Vision and their impact on audiences worldwide. This event features Anna Trent, Thelma Wells, Mary Graham, Luci Swindoll, Sheila Walsh, Jen Hatmaker, Sandi Patty, Patsy Clairmont, Nicole Johnson and Marilyn Meberg, as well as music and performances from Christian contemporary artists.
The inspirational movie, "Race" (PG-13) comes out in theaters February 19. It is based on the true story of Jesse Owens when he faces off with Adolf Hitler and his vision of Aryan supremacy, during the 1936 Olympics.
Further, another redemptive, faith-based movie "Risen" (PG-13) with Joseph Fiennes comes to theaters February 19. After a screening of this movie, Christian Cinema writes[5], "...How to tell the resurrection story from a Roman's point of view? That is tough. Producing historical fiction in any form is challenging, particularly when there aren't many ancillary details surrounding an event....Liddell (producer) ...said, 'One of the most difficult things about telling this story was finding the balance between staying committed to being biblically accurate- which was so important to us- and telling this really amazing fictional story that so many of us can identify with.... we were really struggling with finding that balance...it just hit...a ... clear vision...real sense of peace with the story. I know that was a 'God thing'"
Three more wonderful redemptive movies to look forward to in coming weeks in theaters are "The Young Messiah," "Miracles from Heaven," and "God's Not Dead 2." Moviemaker[6] has recently reported, "Call them what you will. 'Christian,' or 'faith-based' or 'inspirational/spiritual/ministry' films are good business in 2016....Major studios and independent production companies alike... are making and distributing films with a spiritual message...High-profile actors such as Nikki Reed, Jennifer Garner and Nicolas Cage are starring in new faith-based films for theatrical release. Variety has to date hosted two editions of PURPOSE: The Family Entertainment and Faith-Based Summi t, a day-long event of panels and talks with companies 'succeeding in the family and faith-based entertainment space.' It's time to acknowledge faith-based production as a profitable direction for both studio and independent filmmakers in the United States." Most importantly, these faith-based movies point the way to ultimate Truth and to the original source of inspiration, The Bible and to life in Jesus Christ.
Therefore, as to movies, TV, and media we have choices of what we will see and support between the bad and the ugly or the good and the beautiful. What will you choose? As for Austin Movie Examiner, the top pick for redemptive, family movies (teens and above) in theaters this week is "Risen."
