The United States women's national team are playing Germany in the semifinals of the Women's World Cup. It is a clash for the ages, pitting the top-ranked team in the world in Germany against the second-ranked team in the USA.
It also pits the best offensive team of the 2015 Women's World Cup against arguably the best defensive team, and the two best goal keepers in the world in Germany's Nadine Angerer and USWNT's Hope Solo.
Early in the first half it looked like the USWNT had weathered Germany's initial offensive attack and that they had taken over as the aggressors in the game. They got a brilliant opportunity on a beautiful long through ball to USWNT star and forward Alex Morgan.
This gave Morgan a 1-on-1 with Angerer but she couldn't beat the keeper to give the American's the lead.
Morgan and Angerer are teammates on their club team, the Portland Thorns. Fans can't help but wonder if that factored into this play and save at all. Angerer knowing Morgan's tendencies, and Morgan knowing hers. Morgan didn't have much of a chance to line up a better shot and had to take what she could get on the first touch.
